Gloop Entity
May 31—June 29, 2025
ADS-DAS Gallery, Newburgh, New York
Opening reception: Saturday, May 31, 4pm-7pm
“As the boundaries of form in the photo dissolve, and as the boundary of the picture plane is subjected to its own dissolution (more as a door than a window), the distance between the viewer’s body and the fungus, moss, and froth evaporates. To collapse into the work is to be reminded of our bodies’ porousness. The effect is a kind of synaesthesia, or an alchemy of the senses, triggering sensory responses deeper in the body than one’s eyes. The images look like they smell wet. They tingle.” —Max Spitzer
Gloop Entity is a solo exhibition of new photographic sculptures by Mollie McKinley. These works transform tiny details of stream froth and cavern formations into enormous, otherworldly portals. Collage techniques dissolve one bubbling, dripping phenomena into another, creating textural swaths of gloop and undulations. The exhibition is a collaboration with the damp earth of Upstate New York, re-positioning overlooked edges and underworlds as protagonists. McKinley is invested in re-entangling viewers back into relationship with the land and elements, honoring the intelligent margins of the natural world.
This project is made possible with funds from the New York State Legislature and administered by Arts Mid-Hudson. A portion of the large-format digital prints were made possible from a 2024 residency at Light Work.
