Accumulated Ether
Solo exhibition, UrbanGlass, Brooklyn
March 29—May 19, 2023
Accumulated Ether activates the windows of UrbanGlass with works that hold a tension between the visceral and the ethereal. The works interact with the natural cycles of light coming through the windows, shifting their appearance throughout the day and into the evening. The installation is viewable 24 hours a day from the public-facing Fulton Street windows in downtown Brooklyn.
In alchemy, tension between the concrete and the ethereal is often found in the dissolution and coagulation cycle. Ether accumulates into an apparition; an entity; a density. This thickness materializes as waterfall froth, fossilized algae, erosions of minerality, and translucence forged in fire. These phenomena are presented as tangible entities hovering as a mirror to our own bodies, gateways into tender re-enchantment with a chronically ill ecological system, captured as macro photographs and translated into photographic sculpture.
Combining materials of blown glass, carved salt, neon, stained glass, and sculptural photography, the work re-centers the consciousness of the elements by inviting romantic connection with their various phenomena. Amidst ecosystems threatened by climate change, this intimacy is a path towards collectively healing the earth-body—and potentially healing the human body and psyche as well.
