Reclaimed Victorian fountain marble, eroded salt, text

At Ethan Cohen Fine Arts in New York, NY and Kunsthalle Beacon

One thousand pounds of marble, which had been part of a Victorian fountain on an estate in Greenwich, CT become a deconstructed temple steps laid in a line across the floor. Despite being cleaned and resurfaced, the marble still shows signs of being neglected and partially submerged underground and underwater for over a hundred years; time and the elements have stained the stone. Eroded salt sculptures draw attention to the shifts in material notions of time: the seeming permanence and weight of the marble grounds the fragile, ephemeral salt. Viewers must crouch or sit on the floor to fully engage with the temple, bringing the body to a less vertical and hierarchical structure with mystic power. An editioned text poster, entitled Salt Stone and Salt Crown, is available as part of the installation.

Presented by Ethan Cohen’s Kunstalle Beacon in a former school room with black wood floors, and again at Ethan Cohen Fine Arts in New York City as part of the exhibition, In the Cloud.
